Hoop Dreams focuses on serving children with life threatening illnesses
including cancer, obesity, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, and various
immunological diseases. Current participants are typically referred through
Duke University Medical Center and UNC Hospital.

It is estimated that there are approximately three hundred thousand
children with life-threatening illness in North Carolina . Other than a
relatively small number of summer camps, there are very few opportunities
for these children to participate in organized athletics and typical childhood
activities
, much less those that require a special sensitivity to their varying
health conditions. With several major medical institutions in our area, we
have the opportunity to work with children from all over the country who are
being treated at these institutions.
